ZCC relief arm, RUCORS, assessing needs of Chipinge bus accident survivors

The Zion Christian Church relief arm, RUCORS, is assessing the needs of the survivors of the Chipinge bus disaster which killed 39 people, including the deputy headmaster of St Charles Lwanga school where church members hired the bus.

The accident happened on 14 April when church members from Chimanimani were travelling to Mbungo for the Easter celebrations. Twenty-nine people died on the spot.

A delegation of officials from the church was dispatched the next morning to assist with burial arrangements for the dead and to oversee the welfare of survivors and those hospitalized.

The Rugare Community Relief Services (RUCORS) team left Masvingo for Chimanimani on Monday to assess the needs of the survivors and is currently on the ground.

So far 38 people have died, eight of them men, 21 women, and nine children.

The team is offering counselling services to the survivors as well as assessing their needs, including medical services, food, shelter, and in the case of children left behind, their welfare and education requirements.

The church has started raising funds to help the survivors, and is seeking partners to help in providing long-term aid and relief.

Twenty-nine families are said to have lost one or more members.

In one case a family from Zaka lost their only child, while in another case a family from Chiredzi lost three family members who included the father, mother and child.
